British Humanitarian Couple in Their 70s Arrested by Taliban in Afghanistan

Elderly British Humanitarians Detained in Bamiyan
A British couple in their 70s has been arrested by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Peter Reynolds (79) and his wife Barbie (75) were detained on February 1 while returning to their home in Bamiyan.
The couple has been involved in humanitarian projects in Afghanistan for 18 years, focusing on education and training programs for mothers and children. Their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, revealed that she has not heard from them in over two weeks and remains unaware of the reason behind their arrest.
Dedication to Helping Afghan Communities
Peter and Barbie Reynolds first met at the University of Bath and later got married in Kabul in 1970. They have been running education projects in five schools in Kabul and Bamiyan since 2009.
Despite the Taliban regaining power in 2021, which led to mass evacuations of Westerners, the couple chose to stay in Afghanistan to continue their work. Their programs were reportedly approved by local authorities, even though the Taliban has banned education for girls over 12 and prohibited women from working in NGOs.
Family’s Concern Over Their Safety
Initially, the couple was able to send text messages to their four children, confirming they were being held by the interior ministry and were “fine.” However, after three days, all communication stopped.
Their daughter, Sarah Entwistle, living in Northamptonshire, urged the Taliban to release her parents so they can continue their work in Afghanistan. She emphasized that her father needs urgent heart medication, as he had a mini-stroke previously.
Arrest Alongside an American Friend and Translator
Reports indicate that Faye Hall, an American friend, and a translator from their organization were also detained. A former employee of the couple’s NGO described them as “the most honorable people” and confirmed that Mr. Reynolds had been denied his heart medication, raising serious health concerns.
Taliban’s Justification for the Arrest
According to Taliban sources, the couple was arrested nearly 20 days ago due to allegedly using a plane without notifying local security forces. Additionally, the Taliban has imposed strict restrictions on NGOs, banning women from working in them since 2022.
UK Government Response and Diplomatic Limitations
The UK Foreign Office is aware of the situation but faces challenges, as Britain does not recognize the Taliban and has no embassy in Kabul.
Meanwhile, the Reynolds’ children have written a letter to the Taliban, pleading for their immediate release. They stressed that their parents are dedicated to Afghanistan and do not want to be part of ransom negotiations.
The situation remains uncertain, with growing concerns for the couple’s well-being as their detention continues.
